ABOUT A SISTER TO SISTER

A Sister to Sister Interfaith Dialogue Event is all about Serving & Saving the YOUTH!!!

This event is FREE & Open to the Public!!

Part One of the event include workshops that focus on:

self esteem/self awareness;
fashion and dressing ourselves;
personal hygiene and health;
meditation and our higher spiritual selves;
educational planning/career advancement;
personal finances/job readiness.

All workshops will be geared to serve girls and women:

Pre-teen/early teens
Late teen/adult females

Part Two of the event is all about creative expressions related to our key theme: "The Death of Booty" featuring contestants from our poetry, spoken word and essay contest.

Winners will have their work featured in a book or documentary, and may also be an invited guest on the local television show: "Sister's in the Community."

A Kwanzaa Celebration!!!!

Happy New Years!!!!!!And a Happy Day Of Imani (the last day of Kwanzaa)!!!!!!!On the day of Kuumba my sister and I went to a Kwanzaa Celebration. It was wonderful I especially like Bria X Youngblood's presentation.It was very creative and expressive.The second best thing was when the Jr.MGT drilled it was a great even though it was impromptu. The dancers were beautiful and they made every one get up and dance including my sister.

We had to travel all the way from Lafayette to Baton Rouge but I don't care because it was worth it!!!!Tell us what you did this Holiday Break by either sending a comment below or going to our website at: http://girlsgoplaces.webs.com and commenting there!!!!

Our Trip to the AG-Expo at Southern University in Baton Rouge

Two weeks ago my sister and I went on another excursion, this time it was Southern University for the 2009 Family and Youth Ag-Expo. It was great there were many activities including the talent show,the expressive writing contest, the topic writing contest,and the quiz bowl.The quiz bowl was awesome and my sister,Tynetta, knew almost all the answers to the questions.

My sister,brother and I all entered into the topic writing contest for each of our own age groups and we all won!The talent show was great and one girl even read a passage out of shakespears many plays!!!Next time I'm going to ask my friends if they would like to come!

Girls Go To Chicago for Saviors Day

The trip to Chicago was very fun and educational!!!We went for a convention called Saviour's day where the Honorable Minister Louis Farrahkan spoke about what the black community needs to do for itself!!!We also went to the symphony by Mother Tynetta, my sister and I were laughing because her name is Tynetta as well!!!Three of my favorite parts of the trip was hearing the Minister speak ,the muic convention,and exploring Chicago.What did you do for winter break?

Girls go to Planetarium and Museum

Girls Go to the Planetarium and Museum !!They had a room in the planetarium where you could see how many pounds you where on different planets and see where you were in the galaxy. We found out that stars live for billions of years and big stars after a few billion years explode and become a black hole. Once you get swallowed up by a black hole you can never get out of it.Scientist are trying to find what is on the other side of a black hole are it even has a other side.The other side of the Planetarium was the Museum. It had Ancient Egypt Gallery with a mummy. The Planetarium and Museum was wonderful and I hope I can visit it again.

Girls Go to Kwanzaa Celebration

This is a Kinara. It holds the candles that represent the seven days.

This Kwanzaa was awsome! My sister and I went to a Kwanzaa program and learned who created it and why there is a second "a" at the end of Kwanzaa! Did you know that the extra "a" is on the end of Kwanzaa is because there was a extra child at the first celebration so Dr. Mualana Karenga added it. Kwanzaa is Swahili it means "first fruits." Each of the days symbolizes one of Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba):

Umoja (Unity),
Kuji-chagulia (Self-determination),
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility),
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics),
Nia (Purpose),
Kuumba (Creativity),
Imani (Faith).

It is celebrated between the days December 26-January 1. Kwanzaa is a non-religious celebration anyone of any creed,class,or color can join hands to celebrate it!

Girls Go to FFLIC Meeting!

Families and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children or FFLIC is to help children in the juvenile justice center. We went to one of the meetings to help discuss the important matters in Louisiana and all over the country. It was very inspirational and inspiring to my sister and me. We learned that many children in our state and all over the country are imprisoned for things they did and things they didn't do. We hope that in the end change can be made in our justice system because prison is not a place for our youth!

Girls Go to a Community Garden!!!!

This is my sister and I trying to pull the old plants out of the ground and replant them with new ones.

The community garden was a blast!! We fed ducks and picked different types of vegetables.It was fun to see how the ducks reacted to different types of food.We learned that ducks like mustard greens more than corn.

GIRLS GO TO OKRA FESTIVAL!!!

Today we went to a Okra Festival!! It was fun. My sister and I went to work for a while. We sold books ,soap, and the now President -elect Barak Obama t-shirts! We also had a chance to meet up with other girls, enjoy the entertainment and socialize with friends! Hey tell us about a fall festival event you attended!

Girls Go Vote!

Wow! This morning we woke up at 5:45am to go vote with our mother. It was an experience I will never forget. Especially, how long the line was. We saw the actual ballot and it was very interesting. We saw what many people would be voting on today and it was cool seeing all the people lining up to vote.
